NEVADA CITY — October 26, 2026. Nevada County staff and families teamed up with Bear Yuba Land Trust to improve the community’s Hirschman Trail. The county reports that nine staff members plus family volunteers worked on bridge maintenance and cleared invasive Scotch broom during an October 10 workday.
A local trail with different accessibility conditions
The public path begins approximately one mile from historic downtown Nevada City, near the county government center. The county describes the trail as wheelchair accessible up to Hirschman’s Pond, but warns that west of the pond it narrows through woodlands and grassland. Visitors should not assume the entire trail meets the same accessibility standard.
The county entered an Adopt-a-Trail agreement in 2021 covering the eastern section and works with Bear Yuba Land Trust to maintain access and control invasive vegetation. Officials describe the work as volunteer maintenance, not the construction of a completely new trail or a claim that every footbridge now passes all inspections.
How residents can get involved
People interested in public-land maintenance can consult Bear Yuba Land Trust’s volunteer programs. Check actual trail conditions and posted notices when visiting after storms, and avoid disturbance of plants, wildlife or restoration areas.
